The State of California mandates Vehicle Emissions Testing for most vehicles at every other registration renewal period. While not a state requirement, regular vehicle maintenance is highly recommended prior to emissions testing. The emission test includes a smog test, engine compartment check, detailed inspection of coolant level, power steering level, and checks for leaks. According to state law, vehicles less than 6-years old and cars made before 1975 are exempt from emissions testing in California. However, vehicle owners still owe a $20 smog abatement fee at the time of their vehicle registration. The state of California requires periodic emissions testing biennially for all vehicles seven or more years old in 41 of its 58 counties.
